I was thinking about making a thread about this, but I didn't feel like it. :o
Anyway...happy thanksgiving Americans! I'm waiting for my mom to cook lunch...we're having the usual - turkey (I get both of the legs ), mashed potatoes, cranberry sauce, and my favorite thing - sweet potatoes. :D We're also having some more stuff.

Despite the fact that I am not an American, I wish all that are a Happy Thanksgiving Day.
However, I would just like to raise this issue. I've been reading a book called Cold Mountain, an American author and I came upon this somewhat thought provoking passage...
They had, as well, inventer a holiday called Thanksgiving, which Ruby had only recently got news of, but from what she gathered its features to be, she found it to contain the mark of a tainted culture. To be thankful on just one day.
Certainly something to think about...

Yup, and it is apparently awful. I'm studying the book for my A levels and all my English teachers are pleading me, on their knees, not to watch the film. From what I understand of their gabblings, the main reason that all seem to share is that the female main character's hair in the book is black (which is commented on a lot by the author,) whereas Nichole Kidnman who plays her in the film, has rather blonde hair. And also, they miss loads of bits out, so I'm going to finish the book first.
But to stay on topic...
They get a holiday?! Uber jealous...I could be doing so much more other than going to school right now...like going on Psypokes, for example...

I don't follow you since you are the only one that seems to see that we missed it about a month.

Diseh, I think what RadioWilly meant was, Canada celebrates THEIR thanksgiving in October (not exactly sure what the day is, but I think it's a Monday?)
If I'm correct, it was our holiday first, so it is you canadians who celebrate it a month early.

Well, happy Thanksgiving to all who celebrate it. Enjoy yourselves. I don't have the luxury of a holiday at this time, for I'm still studying, albeit for my last paper =p

We are not just thankfull on one day! Thanksgiving was established by the early settlers in America (Pilgrims) and the Native Americans (or Indians). The Native Americans helped the Pilgrims survive the winter, amd as thanks for that, they held a feast, aka, thanksgiving. We are thankfull all the time, but we use this day to be thankfull especially for that.
I had a really nice thanksgiving. We had some company over, and I played some music with my father (Old time fiddling) and then we ate turkey and the likes, and finished it off with some pie. Hope evryone that doesn't celebrate thanksgiving had a good day yesterday too

I wasn't saying that you were, I just thought that the passage was somewhat amusing as it outlines a view of America that doesn't exist. The character who says that quote hasn't grown up normally either, she was brought by herself and is only now loearning about the American culture. I just thought of it as something to think about, I assure you, I do not share this view.

Sorry, I guess I didn't really understand what they were saying. But looking at the way you spelled it out for me, it is rather interesting.....
