Post subject:  Hookey. A World Wide Phenomenon?
Today, while sitting at home, playing hookey. I decided to talk to some of my friends from other countries that I never get to talk to because of Timezone differences.. I talked about how I was playing hookey from school. Now don't get me wrong. I did feel reealy bad. I was up until midnight the last week. Some people might think that's normal. Those people are vampires...

Anyway, out of the two people I was talking to, one of them had no idea what it was. The other only knew what it was because he saw a television show that had people playing hookey in it. AKA, "Saved by the Bell". I was astonished beyond belief. Then, I wondered if in other countries, have hookey as well. Now, I live in the United States of America, and I know that playing hookey is a country-wide phenomenon. But what is it in your country? Do they call it something different? Please, tell us.

We don't 'play hookey' in England, we 'skip', 'skive' or 'skank'. It's not that fun for me, so I don't do it, since I'm told to stay in bed all day, and it does get kinda boring if you do what you want all day anyway.

I live in Great Britain. The country of the Queen, Football, Big Ben and Steak and Kidney pies.

As Kryten said over here it is called skiving. It's mainly chavs that skive off from school... Just because they think they're "Da Bomb" It does get really boring if you're off from school. Nothing to do.

Over here in England, we call it "bunking off". Generally, the police are pretty strict about it, and *prepares for bricking* I have never bunked off, EVER.

Sick days don't count.

Personally, I think "Hookey" is a bad thing. Your parents pay for your education through taxes, and if you waste their money, then you've got it on your conciounce. Not forgetting, if you bunk off at, say, college, you're wasting your OWN money as well.

Really? I did not know that... Anyway, when they say Skiving, I keep on thinking about skidiving of skiing. How abotu all of you other people? How is hookey done in your country?

I usually don't do it. But today, I had my own, special, personal reasons.

Well if it wasn't for Quagsire's reference I still wouldn't know what the topic is about. I'm a New Zealander and it is generally known as 'wagging'. However the terms skiving and bunking have been heard due to the large amounts of immigrants....

this is a damn responsible kid right here.

I was hardly in school all throughout 7th grade. every other day I was at home "sick" haha. I'm the hookey queen.

At first, I read it as "Hockey". Then I noticed it lacked a "c", and had an extra "o". :/

Anyway, I didn't know what "hookey" meant, but after reading your posts I think I kind of figured out it means people who come up with excuses so they won't go to school and may miss classes. I looked at the dictionary and didn't find "hookey", but "hooky", and it says "If a child plays hooky, they stay away from school without permission". I was sort of right... sort of....

Well, we don't use that expression (I don't know if the word "hooky" literally has a meaning or if it means the concept of missing classes as a whole). What we have here is "kill a class": if someone says "I'm killing the maths class tomorrow", it means they're gonna miss it. However, it has nothing to do with permission: we use that expression wether it was authorized or without our parents' knowledge.

I'm not sure if this a country-wide phenomenon here. Only a few friends of mine do it, and most of the time the reason behind it is, ironically, studying, either for another class or for an upcoming exam. Perhaps it's more popular in school, people have a different mentality when they go to college, but I myself didn't stay away from school. I know there's a high "playing hooky" ratio within students who go to state school, but this just one of those social-policial problems of under-developed countries. =P

Anyway, yeah, hookey is a pretty common thing here. Everyone knows what it is, but around here, we don't usually call it that. We usually just call it "skipping school", "too lazy to get up", etc. I play hookey about 10 times every year. Actually, I did it last week. >.>

And no, I do not play truant. I dislike having to catch up with others in school work, and nowadays a lot can be covered in school in a mere day.

I personally wouldn't try to play hookey, because my mother isn't stupid enough to believe it and that just means extra piles of homework when I get back. Also, nobody to talk to, for all of my friends are at school. Although if I ever did pull it off, my mom works all day, so I could do whatever I wanted...

I must admit, I've "wagged" more than a couple of times before. Really, our teachers don't really care so much that we do, it's just if you never turn up to school for a whole week or something that people start getting concerned. Going to a school that has consistantly performed very well annually in terms of Year 12 results, the teachers and stuff (yeah, stuff) probably (from my own experiences anyway) would not care if you got the marks with an imperfect attendance record (as long as it is not too imperfect).

Sometimes school is really silly and is just a childcare for bigger people (IE; the period after exam times) and I tend not to bother with school in this timeframe. (All we do is watch video and play cards anyway) Leaving at lunchtime is something that I'm certain 100% of my school has done before, main reason being the afternoon periods are often doubles in which nothing gets done.

Like Galar said before, a lot of people in my class get out of what would be useless periods to go to the library to study for any upcoming tests and exams.

No, I don't think I'm "hardcore" or "cool" by skipping class, nor do I brag or boast about it to all my teachers. I just do it because I frankly think that there would be a whole lot of other things I could do with my time, instead of just sitting in classes doing nothing. And no, I don't skip periods in which major tests or classes in which I actually learn (like some of my classmates), that would be just stupid.

But I definately don't "fake sickies." I did it once and I felt like I wasted the day. D:

Grrrr. My mom works at my school, so I HAVE to go to school unless I'm blowing chunks into the toilet (ie throwing up)

One time I managed to fake sick by pouring oatmeal into the toilet. That was the best day of my life. Just messing around online, watching
TV, fun.

"Running away from class" is what we call this here in Serbia.

I've skipped class with my friends a couple of times when I was in grade school, mainly because the teachers of the classes we were skipping were major assholes at the time so we didn't want to deal with their tyranny. It only happened a few times.

In high school however... I started doing it way too much for my own good.
Even though nothing was physically wrong with me and I didn't have any diseases I was increasingly fat and lazy.
I was constantly making up reasons to stay at home just so I wouldn't have to go to school... The fact that I had a grudge against the majority of my professors and thought I was inferior compared to my peers did not help either.

Skipping class can be fun sometimes but it's obviously bad if you do it way too much.

5-10 days can be vital, since the kids at school could be a subject ahead of you in Maths, miss a practical Science experiment and miss out on help with essays in English/Literature.

Seriously, it's a stupid thing to do. The only reason I can think of why to do it is if there are bullies that get you everywhere you go.

In Sri Lanka, the main way you meet up with your friends is school. Also, most of us here hate having to catch up with the rest of the class. In fact, kids actually LIKE going to school. No, we don't love studying though. We use the word "hooky". Of course, some kids skip assembly, but whatever. It's fun going for class' and watching the teachers go nuts!

Skiving is baaad. I've never done it. I've only ever skived one detention because the teachers is forgetful anyway.

I 've "skived" plenty of times, personally. Mainly because of bullies though (although not always, sometimes I just cou;dn't be bothered). I do skive from detentions though, and for no reason. I know it's not right, but there it is.

I never skip school, except when I am sick, like today. I don't think like "oh! Bad person! You skipped school!" Of course, I can't really afford to skip school because I have extreme allergies, so I get sick a lot. But we do it in Hawaii too :)

Skiving isn't something I'd do for fun, seeing as the school I go to charges my local council a ton of money to go for a single year (independent special school) and it's taxpayers money being spent on me and quite a few others. The chavs there DO skive sometimes which is quite frankly retarded considering the investment in them by their respective councils. If you're in a normal school funded by the government however, skive all you want. The exams are getting easier anyway (in Britain that is).

While I do agree with what you're saying about independent schools... I really think you have no right to say its alright for people in normal schools to skive... Because you're basically saying that they mean nothing and only people that go to independent schools can achieve something.

lol no. That is a sweeping statement and does not describe my opinion. I think if you REALLY want to skive, do it, I'm not going to stop you nor condemn what you are doing, but it won't help them achieve anything. Non-special independant schools are retarded, nobody there actually gives one that their parents are paying thousands of pounds but they just go and skive off at the chippy or MCDonalds (bleh). Everyone has a chance to succeed in some way or another, it is whether they take said chances and utilize them, comprehensive or boarding school.
