Yes, she runs into walls. She's retarted, but not mentally. :P

Oh. I have a seriously tomboyish sister, we are like exact opposites. But she's not mentally challenged.

Is 'retartedness' in genes?

You know, there's a point when enough is enough. There's been quite a few posts in the General Discussion forum that have been a little out of line, but by far this takes the cake.

Xaliaphous, using the word retarded in humorous manner is very mean and rude, no matter how you meant the word to be said.

No I don't, but I have volunteered and done community service at a place called the Institute of Mental Health before, so I've seen quite a number of mentally challenged people.

Anyway, not all mental illnesses are inheritable, are they? Nonetheless, it's good that you're thankful that you are normal. Hopefully that will make you appreciate your life more =)

It should. That's nice that you volunteered. Some mental illnesses are ineritable, but it's not very likely.
Funny thing is, I've been reading a story about a retard. :|

The only thing wrong with this thread is the idea that it would actually work here. People who are mentally challenged is a serious topic; the vast majority of members here are quite frankly not mature enough to properly discuss it. For proof of this, look no further than the first reply.

I'm leaving this topic open, but I expect that people will be taking the topic seriously. If you can't handle that, then don't click the reply button.

It seems insulting that you said that, but it does make sense. Mentally challenged people is a serious topic. It should be treated as such. Now a question from me.
Is it common to see or come across mentally challanged people? Frankly, I'm not sure.

Jigglypuff was right on target. Listen to him.

My previous job was being a peer mentor, which was really about tutoring kids that have trouble with school. It involved tutoring mentally challanged students, and I had no problem with that. I was happy to help them to get good grades and study for their tests.

Mentally challenged might not mean that one has a mental illness, it might also refer to people with low IQ, but who are otherwise fine, may I add.

I don't think your question needs an answer, Xaliaphous. It's better for you to encounter mentally challenged people and not know that they are mentally challenged. It's not because it's a shameful thing, but because that means that they've successfully integrated themselves into society. That's what we should be aiming for, to integrate such people into mainstream society.

Speaking of that, early this year, a team of students from my school (me included) made a presentation about raising awareness about autism in South-East Asia, and we won the IMF-World Bank Symposium Challenge :P

:P Yay for you.
It does seem that everyone is the same, no one shows any lack in IQ, socialty, etc. It is good to not show things like that, it can lead to mocking and bullying, stuff like that. But of course, some can't help it, like if that they had gotten in a serious accident. They might shake or always smile, cannot move properly. I for one, know a person like that. Her handwriting and socialty is not like ours, but she shows good grades.

Well, I don't think that some people thought that this topic is supposed to be about actual "mentally retarded" siblings, but siblings that do a bunch of stupid things, and really get on your nerves, and make you want to shoot them with a rocket launcher. If you put it that way, I could call my brother that, but that'd be mean. :P

Wow, radio willy, and just when I thought that Jiggz post was actually effecting the maturity of the following posts. Mental retardation, in it's various forms, should never involve rocket launchers. :( tiVo16 started this thread to hear others opinions, to see if he was the only one out there that had to deal with it, but that wasn't helping. My school district has a few challenged students that have stayed in the district for a long time. In my opionion, it is amazing to watch them grow and behave more and more like the majority of other people. The lives that mentally challenged people live today are just like you or me, and I think that is an amazing thing that all over the world they have come this far.

I myself am not mentally challenged (I'm Aspergers Syndrome) but at my school (school for people with communication difficulties), there are a couple of mentally challenged people. I don't see them much, but I do try and help them if they need it.

Anyway...I don't have any mentally challenged siblings, but if my brother was a member of this forum, he could tell you he has a mentally challenged sister...yes...me! I have a lower IQ than normal, and trouble learning. All through highschool, I have had major tests read to me, help on all my homework, and sometimes breaks on tests because of it. Although I have recieved special help throughout highschool, this year (my last year) I have agreed to try to get through this year on my own.

No, because I'm probably not as "mentally challenged" as you are thinking I am. I can still do things for myself, that severly handicap people can't. I just have problems learning and concentrating, so getting through the school year can be a pain. Suprisingly though, I passed all five sections of the Ohio Graduation Test in one try, and currently the only LD student in the building who doesn't have worry about them. :P I also plan on going to college, where I will have no special help, which is why I am trying to get through my senior year of highschool with absolutely no help from anyone.
