Quote: Steve "The Crocodile Hunter" Irwin is dead after being attacked by a stingray on the Great Barrier Reef during the filming of a new TV series.
The 44-year-old's heart is believed to have been pierced by the stingray barb.
He was filming an underwater documentary at Batt Reef near the Low Isles about 32 nautical miles off Port Douglas when the accident occurred.
According to a Queensland Ambulance Service spokesman, a Cairns ambulance chopper made an emergency flight to an island in the area just after 11am today.
An intensive care doctor and a paramedic attempted to revive the popular crocodile wrangler without success.
He was pronounced dead on the island, and his body is now being flown to Cairns.
Mr Irwin - known worldwide as the Crocodile Hunter - is famous for his enthusiasm for wildlife and his catchcry "Crikey!".
The father of two's Crocodile Hunter program was first broadcast in 1992 and has been shown around the world on cable network Discovery.
He's also starred in movies and has developed the Australia Zoo wildlife park, north of Brisbane, which was started by his parents Bob and Lyn Irwin.
All I can say is - crikey!

Oh my gosh...
That was a show I really liked. But seriously, that man made it out of a lot of situations. Poor guy.

Are you for real? Irwin's dead? That guy used to be my idol back when I wanted to be a Zoologist!
I'll research this more, because I'm either in denial or just thick. He was awesome, man, he can't be dead. He's the friggin Croc Hunter for cryin' out loud, and he got taken down by a sting ray?
Not saying you're lying or anything, Flarey. I'm just kind of in shocked disbelief over here....

I love Steve Irwin! When I was a kid i'd beg dad to see if they had any videos of him at the shop and see if he was on after cartoons on a friday.
Crocodile hunter the show was called. I soooo loved it.
Rest in peace Steve Irwin..
He had a good life it seems though. He brought up a kid didnt he? And I dont mean an animal.
Aw Im really shocked like Miasma said, I cant actually believe it, he's the Crocodile Hunter, he seemed invincable when I watched him.

I know it seems hard to believe, guys, but it is very very true. The Crocodile Hunter has hunted his last crocodile
So far nobody that's heard it has believed it, but we have to - coz it's not a joke.

Im believing it now, many myspace contacts have put up bulletins about it and a YouTube user has put a blog about it.
I guess we have to believe it. My family did straight away with the 'it had to happen some day' reaction. I guess his luck with crocs had run out.

How is this possible? He's cheated death over a million times and the filthy Stingray got him? Gah... That certainly made my day a hell of a lot less happy. Talk about getting the wind knocked out of you.
Can't think of anything else to say. All I can is: R.I.P.

To be completly and udderly honest.
I've seen this man Screw around with the worlds most poisonous snakes.
Put his head inside a gator's mouth.
Yet one day he goes swimming and gets Chest Raped by a Stingray. Honestly, Thats one of the worst deaths i could ever imagine.

This is exactly why I freaking hate sting rays. Hopefully he's hunting crocs in the sky, such as the one in Eighteen's pic, but seriously, R.I.P.

Only the second death? That's hard...and he had a family. His kids were so young. And I agree with Sneaky_Sneasel, I think everybody that liked Steve Irwin hates stingrays now. Well, hopefully he's hunting crocs in the sky, like in Eighteen's picture.

Well I heard about this news in the newspaper this morning, and I'm sadened about what happened to Irwin. It's sad the way he died but yeah, he died by doing what he loves. But remember everyone we really can't blame the ray 'cause well Steve came to close and the stingray retaliated what else can you do.It was really a freak accident and I couldn't believe the barb pierce through his heart. I hope his family and friends will overcome his death and remember the good times. The man was truly courageous, adventurous, and the bravest among people. R.I.P Steve Irwin "The Croc Hunter"

It's true. I heard this news today while watching TV. Rest in peace, Irwin. And I won't hate stingrays

R.I.P Steve Irwin.
I watched his shows a few times a while ago. Shame that he died so young.
How ironic though, he's faced crocodiles and poisonous snakes, but he got killed by a stingray. Life is weird...

To not have a father. That must be the ultimate punishment that could be inflicted. I send my grievances to his kids..
And yes, a man COULD die in vain. I will make no further comment, other than to say *cough* Iraq *cough*

I have no mother. So I know what it's like to be one parent short.
I also send grievances to his poor, young kids. And to think, he died doing what he loved. Rest in Peace Steve Irwin.

Yes, he did do some crazy stuff in the past, but he was so passionate in his work, and he has saved so much for the wildlife.
I am an Australian, and all I can do now is wonder who will replace him. Not for his shows, but for his work.
He was only 44, he still had a lot to go for, but this freak accident has costed him his life.

I've been to the zoo he owned, and I believe I was even at the place he was killed (I was in Cairns, not sure if I actually went to Port Douglas or not). He wasn't actually at his zoo that day, so I never actually got to see him in person.
