While there may never be a definitive answer to this, it's something I'd like to know the answer to. What has been the hardest game you've ever played? Which game gave you the most trouble to beat?

Many names come to mind for me when I think of the question, but with all the games I've played, The Adventure of Bayou Billy is probably the hardest game ever. I can't remember if I've beaten the first level without Game Genie. Battletoads and Batman are also really stupid games. (All for NES)

The hardest game I've ever beaten might be Castlevania III. Ikaruga could be harder, but they eventually gave me infinite continues, so I'll never really know unless I constantly delete my game data.

So?

I'll go by systems, because I don't think that any one of the games I've played is the absolute hardest.

Nintendo Systems:
NES: (Never played one)
SNES: Kid Icarus or Castlevania
N64: The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time (The Water Temple is a b**ch)
Wii: The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess

Sony Systems:
PS1: I only had Spyro games and they weren't that hard.
PS2: Final Fantasy X
PS3: (Never played one)

Microsoft Systems:
Xbox: Fable or Spy vs. Spy (<-- Is the best, difficult game ever.)
Xbox 360: (Never played one...yet)

Well, that took a tiedious amount of time and I guarantee that I missed a system of two.

Goddamn Battletoads! Battletoads and Gauntlet are the only two games that I have sat down and tried to beat, but couldn't beat. Same with Castlevania 3, but I can beat that with enough effort.

The following games are the hardest games I have ever beaten.

NES
Batman (ridiculous game!)
Bionic Commando
Blaster Master
Castlevania
Castlevania 2
Double Dragon
Fester's Quest
Iron Tank
Mega Man (all of them, they're all hard!)
Metroid
Ninja Gaiden
Ninja Gaiden 3
P.O.W.
Super C (hard! Contra is easy though)
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
Zelda 2 (not really hard, but annoying)

SNES
Claymates
Contra 3
Joe and Mac 2 (the first one is easy)
Maximum Carnage
Pugsley's Scavenger Hunt
Super Castlevania 4
Super Ghouls 'N Ghosts (HARD!)
Zombies Ate My Neighbors

Sega Genesis
Dynamite Headdy (not hard, but fairly difficult)
Kid Chameleon (hard!)
Rocket Knight Adventures
Ristar
Toejam and Earl (not hard, just tedious)
Toejam and Earl 2: Panic on Funkotron (same)

Add in the Metal Slug games somewhere too. Those games were really hard.

Metroid is :censored: hard. I don't think I've ever made it past the second level. Altered Beast was pretty difficult for me, as well as Toe Jam & Earl. Streets of Rage 3 (US) is REALLY hard, especially compared to the Japanese version.

Most likely Yoshi's island 2. The later levels in that game take me days to do. And that is also why I quit it.

Trauma Center : Second Opinion - It is Super Hard on easy. You have to have quick hands to beat that game (I don't).

I have to agree with a couple previous comments in this thread: Metroid is one tough game! So far corruption has given me a lot of trouble (took me forever to get the last energy cell on Bryyo). But also some of the earlier games, like Metroid Fusion where pretty tough too, even tougher than Corruption.

Ghouls and Ghosts on the SNES is hard as f**ck, why would someone even make a game that hard, all it does is piss you off. Another game that was extremely difficult was Ninja Gaiden for the SNES was also hard as hell, the xbox ones that came out were pretty tough also.

6 Golden Coins was a pain in the space level and in Wario's Castle. I don't think I even finished it.
God Of War on God Mode took me about 14 hours worth of trying to beat Ares in the end.
Legend Of Zelda: Oracle of Seasons took me close to 85 tries to beat General Onyx in his dragon form.
TMNT for the NES was definitely a test on my patience, still haven't finished it.

Nothing is hard when it comes to RPGs, that's why my list is short.

(Final Fantasy Tactics sure had some frustrating boss fights though.)

I'm not good at video games and I really haven't played very many, but one I've never been able to beat is Mega Man ZX, although that sounds kind of stupid because apparently it's easy. I've had it for almost two years (I got it the week it came out, despite having never played a MM game before) and I've still yet to beat Serpent. And that's on easy.

I've heard that Mega Man I was one of the hardest games ever made, but I've never played it so I can't really know.

Star...craft...is...the devil...

I just got this game two days ago (yeah, I know it's old, but it looked fun) and I tried it out. I can't beat the AI!! It CHEATS!! It had literally 10x more resources than me at the end of a game!! It's nearly impossible to beat that thing... The game would rock if the AI wasn't so f**king godly...

To me star craft was very hard but another one that was difficult for me was Lost Planet because I was at the end and I swore that the guy had no health but then I spontaneously blew up :frustrated:

Pfffffft Megaman!? Those games are easy! I beat all of them from 1 to 8. I will have to agree with you with Megaman 1 and 2 though. It wasn't until 3 did I find them easy.

Hard games to me? heheheh lets see here.

NES
Metroid
Megaman 1
Megaman 2

Nothing else here really, maybe Duck Hunt because sometimes the shots won't the Ducks!

SNES
Contra 3
CastleVania (forget which on)
Earthbound (Got stuck at that Vomit boss, but I still love this game!)
Secret of Mana (Quite difficult, but fun.)

Arcade
Strider
Other games which I forget the names of.

Master Belch? You do realize that if you use the jar of fly honey on him, he spends the entire battle eating it?

Anyhow, my list is pretty close to Skull Kid's.

NES
-Battletoads (Gave up years ago, and I don't plan on every retrying)
-Batman (Seriously... what the hell, programmers?!?)
-All 6 Megamans (Anyone who says they're easy, especially the first one, is either lying or cheating)
-Metroid (Corridors corridors corridors corridors GAH WHERE AM I)
-Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (They never had such a difficult time in the cartoon... ARGH.)
-Zelda II (I agree with SK here; it's annoying as hell. Just try playing this game without any guides.)

SNES
-Claymates (This overlooked gem is amazingly fun but also a really challenging platformer)
-Contra 3 (I yield, Konami. You win. I'm never trying again.)
-Plok (Another overlooked platformer; starts out simplistic but quickly gets pretty darn difficult)
-Super Castlevania 4 (Those monster enemies are jerks. It doesn't help that Simon recoils when hit by an enemy like a piece of paper to heavy wind)
-Super Ghouls 'N Ghosts (No words... no words...)
-Zombies Ate My Neighbors (The only way I can beat this is if I go through from the very beginning to the end, stocking up and saving all powerful weapons as much as I can. Starting farther in the game with a password betrays you by leaving you stranded without good items and weapons to use.)

Sega Genesis
-Golden Axe (I've only beat it by using the cheat that takes you to the final battle immediately so you can use up nearly all of your lives. That final boss is CHEAP.)

the resident evil games on a harder difficulty can be pretty damn hard. especially every game except 4. the way the game walks is difficult to get use to plus the scarcity of herbs.

Donkey Kong, Metroid(I don't find the recent ones to be that hard, if you're persistent), I heard Devil May Cry 2 was intense.

That game is very challenging. It is out for the DS and other consoles soon.

Devil May Cry 3 is f**king impossible, DMC 4 is quite tough on Hell and Hell, too.

I could also never quite complete the Metroid Primes :?

Yes Metroid is very hard. I think the most difficult game for me is Kid Icarus (which uses the same running system as Metroid).

And I know people will laugh...but POKEMON YELLOW was pretty damned hard. It was my first videogame. It was in english, way before I knew english. I bought it, and had to wait for a cousin to explain that you had to press 'a' by the pokeball to get your pokemon (lolololololol)...and the hm's sucked...I had to figure out what each did by rotting good pokeys with flash...before i knew where to use it.
