 Guide to Spriting

Err... I suggested a guide to spriting in Viridian Forest. They told me to come here. I sees no spriting guide. Only sig guide. Delete and destroy this if you want, but I'll post a bit of the guide to prove that I can do it, and if the mods OK it, I'll improve it a bit.

Ze Newbie's Guide to Spriting

Note: For all the advice here, I used GIMp. It is easily downloadable from here. Spriting can also work on other formats, on similar principles, but I don't have the time to research those programs. Post advice if you have any tips on using other programs!

Chapter 1 - Recolours
Easy as capturing a Ratatta.

Step 1

Go onto the Psydex. Or another resource. Just get to a sprite encyclopedia, OK?
This is an important notice. DO NOT COPY AND PASTE! Select the sprite by right-clicking the icon. Note: you cannot do this to certain sprites, mainly the animations. With good reason.

Save the picture as whatever you want. Let's save this as "Mew.png". Remember - PNG is the best format to use!!!

Open the picture. It should automatically start up GIMp if you've installed it. For this example, I'll use the colour picker and colour changer, though you can also "graft" colours from one Pokemon to another using the colour picker, which I'll explain later. Anyway, first do some important things.

A. Select "RGB" from the "Mode" option in the "Image" menu.

B. Enlarge image to 800x in the "Zoom" option in the "View" menu, so that you can pick colours more easily.

YAY! BEGIN RECOLOURING!!! Use the colour picker to select a colour out of the image, preferably the darkest shade of a spectrum of a colour. To all idiots out there, that means the darkest shade of pink!

Use the colour changer to change the dark pink to, say, dark green. Don't mess about with the other numbers for now, just change the Hue to whatever colour that you want the Mew to change to. Experiment to get the right colour!

Use the "Select by Colour" icon on the GIMp menu to select the darkest pink. Then...

Step Seven

On your keyboard, press "Ctrl", "+" and "," at the same time! Watch as the dark pink magically turns dark green!

On your keyboard, press "Ctrl", "Shift" and "A" to unselect the colour region.

Repeat steps 4-7 for all the shades of pink until...

Soo... we turned Image into Image

Now, if you want to show it on Psypoke, load it up on a site like Photobucket. Then just copy and paste the IMG onto a Psypoke post. Enjoy your new recolour!

Just wanting to point something out. That's for GIMP, not MS Paint or anything else, which might mess some people up...

Ah GIMP, really cant be bothered to get it as I have Animation Shop 3...

It's a good guide, I don't use GIMP at all so i can't say much. Maybe i'll make a guide to MS Paint spriting at the end of the day if nobody else does. ^_^

Nice tutorial, Note that gimp is a free program, so it's easy to download, for users that don't have anything except ms Paint, it's a great replacement.
I use Photoshop CS2, and use Imageready for my animations, Where I use the select color range function to fill certain color areas with another.

For a full build with debugging, at least 200 megs free is recomended. Without debugging and with static libs turned off, GIMP can be compiled in 20-30 megs of space. This will vary depending on architecture of course. A full GIMP install including all the gimp-data packs can be 20 megs or more.

I prefer Paint and will be greatly happy to make a guide for fusions and recolors.

Recolouring Guide

First things first. Get your base sprite you want to recolour and the ones you want the colours from and paste them into an untitled Paint document.
Here is what you should have so far.

Use the colour picker tool and get all the colours from the base and from the colour sprite.
You should end up with a little colour table like this.

Use the fill tool to colour the pixels that match the colour that you selected.
You should be around here half way through.

Repeat the previous tip for the second colour and so on until you have coloured all you want.
Congrats if your sprite looks like this

Tips for saving:
-With the selector tool, make sure you get all of the sprite and as less background as possible.
-Save as PNG or BMP. JPG/JPEG messes up the colours.
-When uploading, type [img]URL%20HERE[/img] once you have hosted the image.

Just a few things to point out.

1. I love Paint too. TY Kryten but I've got a -slightly- different method.
2. You don't HAVE to make a colour table. Just use the Select tool to pick out a section of the colour sprite which has all the colours you want and Copy-Paste it into a convenient place beside the sprite which you want to recolour.
3. DON'T use .gif either. It screws it up as bad as .jpg.

Now my Guide to Scratch Spriting.

The top thre things you will need are:
1. Patience
2. Time
3. Graph paper.

This method is basically this. Assuming you can draw decently, just draw on top of the graph paper. Then, fill in every square which has a line running through it. Then just copy this into the computer. The grid helps. Without the grid on the graph paper this would be pretty well nigh impossible.
