So I was reviving my interest in the older Pokemon games by powering through Silver again, getting an awesome team and just enjoying the story (the best plot so far, IMHO). I was playing the cart on my SP (it's really annoying how much it sticks out...) and decided to do a little light trading between my old Red cart. So I inserted both cartridges into their respective Controller Paks and powered up Pokemon Stadium 2 on my N64, wherupon I was mildly surprised to see that the game would not register my saved file on Silver (Red was fine). Bear in mind these two points:

*I have never encountered a problem or glitch in a Pokemon game before.
*I had JUST beaten the Elite Four (Five  ) and was looking forward to getting a Steelix with the Metal Coat obtained from the ferry. This constituted around 12 hours of play time, time I could have spent... uh... playing other games if I knew what would happen next.

The icon representing my Silver cart on the startup screen was ****** and SAVED FILE NOT FOUND. Unfazed, I tried the cart back in my Game Boy; and to my horror, the only options I was given on the menu screen after pressing Start were:

NEW GAME
OPTIONS

Noooo! I can't believe this. I just spent the last week rekindling my interest in a great game, only to have it ruined by something, some twist of fate... but what? What could possibly have corrupted my saved data? I do not use cheating devices, and I keep my equipment in good repair (I bought Gold, Silver and Stadium 2 as a bumper pack waaay back in Gibraltar in 2002). Any ideas to what it could be? Has anybody experienced the same problem as me? Sorry to bore you all with a tedious whining session, but I felt it necessary to get it off my chest. Guess I'll stick with the advanced games in the future :(

I have heard (this is also on other threads) that GSC games are getting old, and the batteries are running out, making it difficult for the internal computer to maintain saved data. My games are already starting to not save on occassion. My guess is that you have one of the earlier cartridges.

I have a theory. Maybe how often you play a cartridge has an impact on the internal battery. For instance, my Gold version is having trouble holding saves, but my buddy's games are all fine, including his now antiqued RBY series. However, I play my games ALOT more often than he does (what can I say? I'm a pokemaniac.). I just got him to fire up his Silver version last week after two years of sitting in his dresser. I'll bet that's why my Johto generation games are already wearing down while even his Kanto ones are still going strong. Gungnir, how much did you play Silver before you lost interest? (humor me here, will you?;))

Well, I eagerly awaited Gold and Silver coming out as I was pretty hooked on Pokemon back then (bear in mind I was about 16). I got them along with Stadium 2, and really enjoyed the games for a good few months/half a year at least... if you'd remember, the PS2 and XBOX had just arrived, and there were far more distracting projects to spend my time on. My brother got into Pokemon as well around that time, but he turned to the dark side and would often use Gameshark and Action Replay to hack impossibly strong teams, whereas I'm more of a traditionalist - I just get more satisfaction personally raising my squad.

Time passed, Ruby and Sapphire came out along with the GBA, and I relegated the older generation of games to a dusty cupboard in my spare room. It was only recently that I decided to drag them out again and remember what really sustained my interest in the Pokemon franchise.

Unfortunately, what happened happened, and I'm pretty cautious about playing the GSC generation now... my guess is that the internal clock and battery just ran out of juice after years of disuse. Consider yourself officially 'humored', Miasma :D

I'm not so sure if the battery thing is 100% correct..

You see, I have a Gold game I won from a Frito Lay contest in October of 2000 (The month it was released I believe) and it has never reset, I have 935 hours on it and it's the same file I started in 2000.

I haven't played the Gold in two years but I did play it pretty much daily for awhile.

Yet, I bought Crystal in 2001 or 2002 brand new and after 3 monthes it reset itself (And I was stupid and started a new file on it right away).

I'd suggest keeping them in a case to prevent dust and other things from getting in them (Or in the actual system if you don't have a good case) and if it does happen again, leave the game alone for a bit and it may or may not return (It's happened to me in Silver quite a many times, but it returned after awhile)

With the stadium 2 thing, sometimes the Controller paks are a little loose or not in all the way, try taking them out and put them back in (press the switch on the controller in too, when you put it in, I think it makes a difference sometimes).

Hmm...I'll bet your right, RaichuLatias. I asked around because this topic intrigued me (Seriously, I need a hobby :) ) and I discovered that among my Pokemon playing friends the saving problem is uncommon. (2 out of five, including me had the problem) After I read your last post, I thought for a second and remembered that I keep my games in my old dresser drawer when not in use. This might account for all the quirks my games are producing. (Maybe it's time to do a little springtime dusting?)

Yeah, none of my Johto games save anymore. Crystal still does, but I don't want to play it for 30 hours then find out that my file got erased.

I only play the advance games, because they don't have an internal battery that holds the save file, or I play the Johto games on a ROM.

Okay, thanks for your input everyone! I'll stick with the Advanced Generation games now, although it would kinda suck if they developed this problem in a few years time :)

Wow....I am having the same problem with my Gold Version and I thought it was the result of me using Gameshark on my Gold Version to catch Shiny Pokemon and mutliply TMs. I've had my Gold Version since it came out and now it won't save games anymore.

Here's what happens. If I play my Gold Version on a Game Boy I can play the game normally, and I can still use the option to save a game. Even when I do "Save Game" it says that the game is saved. However, as soon as I turn off the game, there's no continue option when I restart the game. On Pokemon Stadium 2, if I try to play on the GB Tower, it won't even start a new game. I can get to the title screen, but if I choose New Game it says that it has problems reading the cartridge.

This isn't good, because all my Pokemon were deleted. Fortunately I moved all my Shinies to Crystal, but my main party filled with lvl 100's were all deleted, and the main stash of my multiplied items were held there as well.

If it is a problem with the internal battery, is there any hope for restoring the game? Otherwise, the cartridge is useless to me... :(

My Silver and Crystal Versions still work, but I haven't played Silver and Crystal nearly as much as I have Gold.

I just bought a silver and it won't save. What a rip-off! I just leave it on
