In my own opinion, Shell Bell is better than Leftovers.

It depends on the situation. I would never give a Shell Bell to Blissey, but I might consider using a Shell Bell on Metagross. Generally I stick with Leftovers because I'm ensured a little bit of recovery.

Basically, it depends on the situation. For sweepers, whether physical, special or mixed, that have at least 3 offensive moves, use Shell Bell as it heals more HP than Leftovers. On the other hand, for any other battling types, especially on tanks or on Pokemon that have a lot of HP like Blissey, Snorlax, Wailord, etc, use Leftovers instead.

I think lefties are much better. If you are charging with moves like Bulk Up, Calm Mind or Swords Dance, Its better to have some garunteed return of HP, rather than to depend on luck that it doesnt kill you. Also, even though Shell Bell's HP return rate varies, Leftovers has a fixed return rate, which is more dependant.

Leftovers are much better in my opinion, since you always recover, especially when you have to recover (the move).
I would use it on my Latios if I had extras.

I want to know if this works. If your pokemon has Shell Bell, and Uses Counter, would Shell Bell restore health? If that is the case than some counter pokemon just got a really nice item.

i don't know if that would work but i shall try it with my chansey that knows counter. Though personally i prefer leftovers, i gave it to my chansey(it has 268 hp at level 41) and it recovers 18 hp each turn.
on an off topic, i annoyingly discoverd that my golbat and chansey will not evolve until i get the national dex. Grrrr.

Lefties. You must deal damage for Shelly to work. Lefties doesn't need damage-dealing.

Read my earlier post... It depends on the situation. I said in that post about using Shell Bell on sweepers, and Leftovers for other battling types.

shell bell works best on sweepers, whilst leftovers is more suited to pokemon with high defenses(torkoal, aggron) and those with loads of hitpoints(blissey, wailord, wobuffet). Because leftovers recovers a percentage of the Pokemon total hitpoints each turn, the higher the hitpoints the better leftovers works.

I prefer Lefties, but I find Shell Bell useful in BT (or in other situations) where Item Clause is in effect.

Leftovers restores 1/16 of total HP per turn, and Shell Bell restores 1/8 of damage inflicted. Using those factors, make your choice.
Personally I prefer Leftovers as it works regardless of status condition, and Shell Bell doesn't tend to heal that much anyway (rarely ever more than 10).

Thats not entirely true, since it heals a percentage, the higher the hitpoints the more health it heals, but it makes the same overall difference to your HP.
Eg.
160HP -Heals each turn- 16HP
80HP -Heals each turn- 5HP
A difference in healing indeed, but not percentage wise as it always heals 1/16.

Leftovers over Shell Bell. It works in every turn.

one question:
i had a Raitchou named Kamikazi and had the following moves:
Counter
Volt Tackle
Thunderbolt
and i think it was Double-edge or sweet kiss
it was holding a shell bell and was my best trained Raitchu ever!
now --ok-- shell bell recovers 1/8 but how much damage do moves like volt tackle..?[/size]

I apparently haven't chimed in with my opinion yet. In my experience, Leftovers works better for me. My pokemon are almost always faster (I usually go with 252 EVs in speed), so they attack first. This means my biggest hit (no defensive stat boosters, opponent is at full health) comes on the first turn, before I've been attacked, so I'm also at full health. Then, if I don't KO with that attack, I get hit back, and then I have less to gain back, because the other pokemon is already injured, and I missed that first turn of draining. If I was consistently attacking second, Shell Bell might be a much better choice.

For me it depends on the pokemon. If it is a sponge or tank like Blissey or Dusklops, use leftovers. If it is a sweeper like Salamence or Charizard, use Shell Bell.
If you choose shell bell for your sweeper, make sure it's either a Physical Sweeper and have EVs in 252 atk, 252 speed, or you have a Special Sweeper and the EVs are 252 sp atk, 252 speed. The maxed out attack/sp atk EV will cause shell bell to restore more health. If you have a mixed sweeper and must do EVs like 128 atk, 128 sp atk, 252 speed, then the attacks will be lowered and shell bell won't restore as much health, so leftovers will do better.
