And Espeonage9523, your Pokemon has to be immune or not very effected by the last Pokemon's attack. Shinx doesn't resist Surf. And your attack has to be Super Effective against the last Pokemon. Thunder is regularly effective against Bronzong.

Peliper is not resistant to Ice punch, as it is part flying it takes normal damage, thus you slipped.
Please note:
Ryder is using water flying types because they resist everything that is super effective verse steelix, and steelix is resistant to both its 2 weaknesses.
