So Jeopardy had a decent turn out with 5 participants and 1 guest. Fortunately two newer members were able to join us (Samurott and DragoBoy). Rhapsody left just before we started and SS had work :(. There were some delays to slow us down along the way and a bit of lag at times but the second round went pretty smoothly. Here are the scores for Jeopardy:

It's been a long time since the last Psypoke Trivia or Psypoke Jeopardy so I've decided to host one myself! It will be like the Jeopardy tiger10x hosted from mid 2007 through late 2008. Click here to see one of tiger's Jeopardy wrap-ups. It will be my first time hosting so hopefully it won't be laggy or slow-paced and everyone will have as much fun as they always do in Trivia.


GAME DETAILS (most content copied from tiger's posts)

Where/when?

In the #psypokejeopardy chat channel on KBFail's server (irc.kbfail.net). Date and time will be (tentative) Thursday at 6pm EDT on the 14th of June. I anticipate that the game will take 1 hour.

For using the java applet to access the chats: go here, click on the Java Applet link, and type /join #psypokejeopardy when you're connected.

How it works:

This Jeopardy works very similarly to normal Jeopardy. A clue is given, and after three seconds, people can buzz in. In order to do this, all you have to do is say "buzz" after the mode -m is set and hope that you entered it first. The buzzing process will be explained again at the beginning of Jeopardy.

After you buzz in, you will have eight seconds to answer. In order to answer, you must give the question to the clue (like normal Jeopardy). For example, one clue would be "this Pokemon is the first alphabetically," and its correct question (what you submit) would be "what is Abomasnow?". If you answer correctly you will earn the points equal to the value of the question. If you get the question wrong however, you do lose points. You will always be given the whole 8 seconds but I will only accept your first answer if you give more than one. You will be allowed to fix typos, though. If you need help, simply watch other people play along.

Jeopardy also consists of the ability to choose the next question from multiple categories and point values. This only happens for the person who gets a question correct though. There are two rounds of six categories and five values, which adds up to 60 total questions. Sometimes however, a round will end a little before all of the questions are chosen if it takes too long.

It even consists of its own bonuses. One Daily Double in the first round and two in the second round can (as they suggest) double your points in the game. Before the clue is given, the participant who buzzed in will wager some or all of their points and earn double that amount if they answer correctly or lose the wagered amount if answered incorrectly. Only the chooser will be able to answer the question, and ten seconds are allowed to answer.

Final Jeopardy concludes the event. Here, one usually tough clue will be given. Like Daily Doubles, you can wager as many of your points as you want. For this question, an amount of twenty or thirty (depending on the type of question) seconds is allowed for you to think over your answer while you imagine the special Jeopardy music. After this, the final scores are tallied, and the winners are announced.

All script commands will be explained during the event for those that need help.

Rules:

1. Do not use any colours or /me commands.
2. Do not argue if you thought that you buzzed in before someone else. The entire process is scripted, and it is based on what appears on my screen only.
3. Do not PM any ops, especially me. If you have a complaint/question/whatever, wait until a break. (during the event)
4. Do not use any reference materials (such as the site).
5. Answers MUST be given in a question format such as "What is Pikachu?". This will be taken loosely, but drastic mixups between "where" and "who" will be called incorrect. (Pokemon are considered as "what"s)
6. You must use your forum name to receive any prizes. Various exceptions are allowed, but ask first.
7. Do not change your nick during the event.

I don't intend to do any freezing but I will have the ability to prevent participants from buzzing in should I choose to do so.

Does only "buzz" work for buzzing in?
Yes, so you better type it out first and wait for -m to press enter. Even missing a "z" or using colours would cause the script to skip over you.

What are the special commands that will be included?
!chart: Shows the chart to the person choosing the next question.
!q (category) (amount): Selects the next question.
!wager (amount): Allows an easier process for wagering in daily doubles.

Only the second and third commands there will be mandatory. All will be brought up during the event.

Why can't I talk when I get in there?
This would be supposing that you're late and +m is set. This usually means that it is between questions. +m is a special mode to be set on chat channels that mutes people without special privileges (voice or op). These are only given to staff members and people choosing questions.

How will typos be dealt with?
If they are understandable, they will be acceptable. I will allow you to fix typos in the 8 second window you are given to answer your question.

What happens to rule-breakers?
Loss of 10000 Psybucks in the game, loss of all Psybucks on the offender's forum account, and permanent bans from #psypoke, #psypokejeopardy, the forums, the main site, and the internet forever. In other words, don't do it. :O

That definitely sounds like something I'd be interested in! I just need to remember to turn my colors off during that time. Fortunately, that shouldn't be too hard to remember.

Friday 9PM EDT isn't something I'll be able to make (at this time, pretty much any time during a weekday is great for me, and weekends are mostly tentative), but if that's the time that most people want, I'll just step back from the event.

As I am currently in Singapore and working full time, doing it on a weekday at a time that is reasonable for North Americans is tough. It could possibly be at 6 pm EDT (any day) but I'd have to wake up early. I could do it 10 pm EDT or later on a Friday night but I think that would be too late for most people.



1. By script I mean the code I use to automate parts the game or to respond to user commands. Don't worry about it.

2. Basically each turn one participant selects a question. After the question is selected I state the clue and after three seconds the channel will be set to -m (when +m is on, only special users can talk, i.e. me and possibly other staff) and every one will be able to speak. You will have to enter the word 'buzz' (and only 'buzz') and if you are the first person to do so on my screen, +m will be set again and you will be given +v (meaning you can talk while +m is on) and will have 8 seconds to answer the question. In other words, like in real Jeopardy! you have to be the first person to buzz in to be able to answer. Since we can't use real buzzers, the method will be saying the word 'buzz'.

This is a great idea! The old Trivias and Jeopardies that were run by TK/FS/Krisp/tiger were lots of good fun, haha it was only a few days ago I suggested to Krisp that we we should have another one pretty soon! I think it's great you've taken the initiative to host your own Jeopardy, hopefully this will push Psypoke a little to what it used to be. I'll even pitch in a couple of Psybucks myself, hopefully we can get a bimonthly, or even quarterly thing happening if this is successful enough (might be wishful thinking but it's really great for Psypoke as a whole if we can get more of these get-togethers). I myself wouldn't mind helping out with hosting/etc, but I'll join the chat first I guess before committing to anything.

In terms of timing/attendance, unfortunately I'm teaching those times, I might be able to make it halfway through but nevertheless I'll probably be idling in the channel and joining in on the post-party. It's been... 4 years... since I've headed over to the chat so yeah I think I will swing by, say hi to everyone, see how everyone's going.

But to everyone else: these chat activities are really fun and I'd encourage everyone to at least show up, get to know the staffers a bit better, and just meet a few of your favourite Psypokes.

Then just make it whatever time works best for you. If I can make it, I'll join; if I can't, I won't - simple as that. No hassle.

Do you really use colored text during normal conversations on irc?

Yeah. I am normally on another server, and I frequently use colors there - mostly to tell which lines are mine.
Out of habit I do tend to use Ctrl+O when on the KbFail server out of respect, but fortunately my colors (light gray on purple background) aren't that much of an eyesore, so it isn't a big deal when I forget to use them.
I can adjust my color script to negate colors in one channel (don't know how to do it with two or more yet), so if I'm on for Jeopardy I'll do that.

Sooo I'm gonna go through with this but I still don't have a set date.

I am now proposing Thursday at 6pm EDT on the 14th, 21st or 28th of June but this is an arbitrary time that I assumed will work for more people. Let me know if it works for you and if not (and you want to participate) tell me what time does work and I'll move the time around to fit your schedule.

The times I am not available for hosting this are 7:30pm - 7:30am EDT Sunday to Thursday since I'm at work.
