Mark Spitz - he competed for the U.S. in 1972 and won 7 golds for. . .100-meter & 200-meter freestyle, 100-meter & 200-meter butterfly, 400-meter, 800-meter freestyle relay and the 400-meter medley relay.

Actually, psycho-freak, Phelps only got 6 golds, 8 total though..

100m Butterfly
200m Butterfly

He still won the gold medal for that event. You only have to participate in one relay to be counted in the team.
